Introduction
Hogwarts is an open-source, multi-tenant school automation platform for K-12 institutions.
Hogwarts automates the operational core of a school — admissions, classrooms, attendance, grading, fees, messaging — so staff spend less time on paperwork and more on teaching. Every line of code is open source, every contribution is attributed.
What it does
- School operations. Multi-tenant SaaS — one platform serves many schools. Each school gets its own subdomain, branding, roles, and data isolation.
- Bilingual by default. Arabic-first with full RTL support; English LTR mirror. UI labels and dynamic content both translate on demand.
- AI-augmented. Document intelligence for admissions, bank receipts, and (planned) exams, library, and onboarding.
- Open source. SSPL-1.0. Self-hostable today, managed SaaS for schools that prefer not to.
Architecture
Mirror pattern
Routes mirror components. Server components fetch, client components interact. No prop drilling.
Multi-tenancy
Subdomain-based tenant resolution, schoolId scoping on every query, edge middleware routing.
Mirror patterns
Page, layout, content, actions, queries, form, table, columns — canonical shapes for each file.
Stack
Next.js 16, React 19, Prisma 6, NextAuth v5, Tailwind 4, shadcn/ui.
Where to start
Get started
Clone, install, run the dev server, ship a first PR — under 15 minutes.
Demo
Walk through the live platform with the demo school and credentials.
MVP
What's in scope, what's shipping, what's deferred.
Contributing
Commit conventions, testing, community channels, your first PR.

Conventions
- Single-language storage. One
langfield per row; generic field names (title, body, name); on-demand translation cached inTranslation. schoolIdscoping on every query. MissingschoolId= data leak across tenants.- Semantic HTML. No hardcoded
text-*/font-*classes; logical CSS properties so RTL works without overrides — see Style guide.
For full constraints and the role model see PRD.
