Universities & Training Centers
Graduation projects, capstone teams, training-center cohorts, faculty research-grant partnerships, endowed positions. Win-win — students get real-world capstones; we get focused contribution capacity.
This doc is the academic-partnership inventory. Universities and training centers are a non-obvious but high-leverage capital + talent + grant channel for an open-source EdTech that runs an explicit contributor model. Adjacent to Partners and Sponsors but distinct: capital here is mostly in-kind (student labor, faculty endorsements, research grants where we are co-PI).

Executive summary
We have an unusual structural fit with universities. Three reasons:
- Open-source codebase — students can read and contribute to a production codebase without breaking NDA or IP barriers.
- Existing contributor model — Shared Economy already provides point-based valuation, vesting, and recognition for outside contributors.
- Real-world problem space — schools, attendance, exams, fees, multi-tenant SaaS, AR-first product, AI integrations. Plenty of capstone material.
Win-win pattern:
- Student wins: a real-world graduation project, a deployed feature, a public commit history, a reference letter, possible employment / equity via the contributor model.
- Hogwarts wins: feature shipped, content (sample data, documentation, translations), bug fixes, design polish — at zero direct cost.
- University wins: industry-relevant capstone, accreditation evidence, employer relationship.

Tier 1: Capstone / graduation projects
How it works: a 3-6 person student team takes a Hogwarts-defined problem as their graduation project. We provide: problem brief, codebase access, mentor (1 hour / week), end-of-semester review. They deliver: working feature, documentation, contribution points via Shared Economy.
Where to pull problems from: open issues in github.com/databayt/hogwarts labeled good-first-capstone (to be added). Examples of capstone-sized features:
- AI tutor MVP for one subject
- Offline-mode improvements for low-connectivity schools
- New translation locale (e.g., Hausa, Swahili)
- WhatsApp Evolution API improvements
- Mobile-responsive view for a specific persona (e.g., parent on a cheap Android)
- Accessibility audit (WCAG 2.1 AA) of one feature block

Tier 2: Training-center cohorts
How it works: a training center (Tuwaiq Academy, Re:Coded, ALX, Misk Academy) places a cohort of 10-30 learners with us for 3-12 weeks. We provide: structured task list, mentorship, capstone evaluation. They provide: learners + cohort sponsorship (sometimes paid by the training center to us, sometimes by us to them).
Best targets:
- Tuwaiq Academy (KSA) — Vision 2030 bootcamp pipeline; pays placement fee to host industry. Fit: 5.
- Re:Coded — Sudan/Iraq/Turkey; refugee + underserved learners. Sponsor-supported. Fit: 5.
- ALX (Pan-African) — software engineering apprenticeship; their learners need real industry projects. Fit: 4.
- Andela Learning Community — Pan-African; large network. Fit: 4.
Tier 3: Faculty research grant co-PI
How it works: a faculty member submits a research-grant application (to KAUST, KFUPM, IDRC, EU Horizon, etc.) with us as the industry co-PI. We bring the codebase, the data (anonymized), and the deployment. They bring the academic framing, the methodology, and the publication channel. Grant cash typically flows through the university with a budgeted industry-partner allocation.
Best targets:
- KAUST faculty — Innovation Fund + research grants. Strong AI / data / education research presence.
- KFUPM faculty — Strong CS / IS faculty; KFUPM Innovation Center; Saudi research grants flow through.
- AUC faculty (Egypt) — Strong applied CS + the Venture Lab adjacency.
- University of Khartoum + SUST faculty — Sudan-specific research grants via UNESCO, IDRC, AfricaConnect.
How to find faculty: identify CS/AI/Education faculty publishing in adjacent fields (school management systems, education AI, multi-tenant SaaS, AR-first UX). Cold-email with a specific 1-paragraph collaboration idea.
Open-source contributor pipeline
Universities are our top-of-funnel for the open-source contributor pipeline. After capstone or cohort engagement, top students get invited to:
- Continue contributing via Shared Economy point system.
- Apply for paid contractor work as we hire.
- Apply for full-time roles after graduation (with their contribution history as portfolio).
This is also how we build the advisor bench among faculty: a faculty member who supervised 2-3 successful capstones becomes a natural advisor candidate.
Anti-patterns
- Over-scoping a capstone. A team of 3-5 students has ~200-400 hours over a semester. Scope features accordingly; don't ask for an entire feature block.
- Treating capstone code as free production work. Quality is uneven; we still need to review and refactor.
- Skipping the contributor-credit acknowledgment. Always credit students publicly on the shared-economy page and in commit history.
- Vague faculty intros. "We'd love to collaborate" is dead on arrival. Bring a specific 1-paragraph research idea.
