Competitions & Hackathons

PreviousNext

Pitch competitions, hackathons, innovation challenges — capital + visibility + customer access in a single short cycle.

This doc is the competitions and hackathons inventory. Competitions are short-cycle (1-3 months), often non-dilutive, and serve as a credibility multiplier even when we don't win. Adjacent to Accelerators but distinct: shorter, cheaper to enter, and often deliberately public.

Last verified: 2026-05-18.

Executive summary

Why we apply to competitions:

  1. Capital — prizes range from $5K to $1M; many winners get follow-on access.
  2. Visibility — finalists get press, jury attention, mentor networks.
  3. Customer discovery — judging panels include ministry buyers and corporate partners we couldn't otherwise reach.
  4. Deadline forcing function — competitions force us to ship polish on schedule.

Why we don't apply to all:

  • Time cost per application can be 20-40 hours; we cap at 6-8 competitions per year.
  • Pay-to-pitch competitions are a filter (we never pay an entry fee > $50).
  • Niche themes that don't map to EdTech (climate-only, blockchain-only, etc.) get filtered out.

Selection criteria

Apply if at least three of these are true:

  1. Prize includes non-dilutive cash or grant.
  2. Judging panel includes target buyers (ministry of education officials, school owners, corporate L&D leads).
  3. Open to MENA / Africa / global participants (not US-only).
  4. Theme aligns: education, K-12, EdTech, AI for good, Arabic-language tech, open source, digital public infrastructure.
  5. Entry fee is free or < $50.
  6. Past winners include credible startups (not just "TechCrunch-Disrupt-style" hype companies).

University-affiliated competitions are most accessible when we partner with a university (see Universities).

Application priority (rank-ordered)

  1. NTDP Innovation Challenges — direct KSA government channel, Connect PoC up to $200K, named Vision 2030 priority.
  2. MIT Enterprise Forum Arab Startup Competition — MENA flagship; up to $200K + accelerator pathway; finalist alone is credibility.
  3. GESS Education Innovation Awards — direct EdTech category, exhibitor exposure to MENA school buyers.
  4. MSAR Hackathon — Sudan-anchored, already documented in Incubators.
  5. HolonIQ Global EdTech 1000 — nomination-based, visibility only but very high signal.
  6. WSIS Prizes — UN platform; matches Sudan reconstruction + Arabic-first digital public infrastructure narrative.
  7. Misk Innovation Hackathons — multiple per year, KSA exposure.
  8. LEAP Pitch Competitions — annual Riyadh, $430M+ event ecosystem, target audience attends.

Everything else stays watching unless a specific angle opens.

Application workflow

For each competition:

  1. Read past winners — extract pattern; tune narrative.
  2. Identify the jury — research 1-2 judges per panel; pre-empt their likely questions.
  3. Pick the angle — EdTech-only events get the Traction signal. Generalist events get the impact-first version from Pitch §grant pitch.
  4. Prepare the pitch deck variant — most competitions cap at 5-10 slides. Strip Deck to fit.
  5. Submit via T2 or T4 (Outreach) — competitions often have program manager intros; introduce yourself with the cold email before formal submission.
  6. Practice the pitch — 3-min, 5-min, 10-min versions. Have all three ready.
  7. Log status in the table above + Data Room.
  8. Post-event — finalist or not, follow up with every judge and 2-3 fellow finalists.

What competitions ARE NOT

  • A reliable source of capital. Most startups don't win. Plan as if you won't.
  • A substitute for direct sales. Customer discovery in the panel is a side benefit, not the strategy.
  • A vanity collector. We don't apply for line items on a Wikipedia page; we apply for capital, customers, or deadline forcing.
