Market landscape and competitor analysis — global SIS incumbents, MENA regional players, British-curriculum MIS, open-source peers, and how Hogwarts compares.

Hogwarts is an open-source, multi-tenant K-12 platform shipping in production at ed.databayt.org. Where the established SIS vendors target large North-American districts with closed, English-first stacks, Hogwarts is Arabic-first, RTL-native, subdomain-isolated per school, and priced for emerging-market budgets.

This page maps four distinct competitive sets — global SIS incumbents (the feature baseline), MENA regional players (who we actually meet in a deal), British-curriculum MIS (who the international schools shortlist), and open-source peers (the closest architectural analogues) — plus the assessment tools that shaped the exams module. The battle-card section is the prose for proposals and discovery calls.

Two companion pages go deeper:

Landing-page teardown

Hero copy, proof bands, CTA gating and pricing transparency across 20 vendors — and where ours diverges.

Competitor FAQ

Every question and fear a school brings to an evaluation, with the public answer and how to handle it honestly.

Market figures below were last verified August 2026. Every number is sourced in Sources; refresh the citations before reusing them in a deck or a proposal.

Market at a glance

MetricFigureRead-across for us
SIS market size$8.36B (2026) → $15.36B (2031), 12.9% CAGRThe category is growing, not consolidating into a winner
Broader school-management-system market$25.83B (2026) → $42.66B (2030), 13.4% CAGRSIS is a slice; fees, HR, transport, LMS are the rest of the wallet
GCC EdTech market$3.2B+ (2025)Our beachhead region is funded and buying
Largest single K-12 SIS segment (NA)"Others" — ~25% of implementationsFragmentation is the opening: no vendor owns the long tail

The last row is the most important line on this page. Even in the most consolidated SIS market on earth, a quarter of districts run something outside the top seven vendors. In MENA — where Arabic-first UX, ministry reporting formats, and local payment rails all differ — that long tail is the whole market.

Global SIS incumbents

Market share is North-America-only, from ListEdTech's database of 23,000+ US and Canadian districts (November 2025). It sets the feature baseline we must reach; it says nothing about MENA, where none of these vendors lead.

VendorNA K-12 SIS shareKnown for
PowerSchool23%Market leader; acquired by Bain Capital for $5.6B (Oct 2024)
FACTS SIS15%Private + faith-based; tuition and SIS bundled
Infinite Campus10%State-level deployments; the main PowerSchool switch target
Skyward7%Qmlativ platform; strong ERP/finance side
Blackbaud3%Independent K-12; fundraising + SIS
Ascender (TxEIS)3%Texas ESC co-op; 850+ of ~1,250 Texas LEAs; state-reporting native
Synergy (Edupoint)3%Single-database SIS + LMS + MTSS
Veracross—Independent schools; single-record architecture
Classter—500+ institutions, 40+ countries; Microsoft-ecosystem native

Two trends worth naming in a sales call:

  • Security is now a switching trigger, not a checkbox. PowerSchool disclosed a breach in January 2025 exposing data on ~60M students and ~10M teachers; North Carolina districts have since migrated to Infinite Campus, citing security alongside features. Litigation reached the private-equity owner. Every school board in 2026 asks where the data lives — which is exactly the question open source and self-hosting answer well.
  • AI moved from add-on to differentiator. Predictive analytics and workflow automation are now embedded in the major platforms rather than sold as modules. Our AI-assisted admission and auto-marking are table stakes going forward, not a moat on their own.

MENA regional players

These are the vendors we actually meet in a deal. Only some compete for the system-of-record; the B2C and content platforms compete for the same school budget and the same parent mindshare, which matters just as much.

PlayerBaseReachCompetes with us on
ClasseraSaudi / SVMillions of students, 30+ countries, 10+ ministries; $40M Series A led by Sanabil (PIF); acquired Expert Solutions (education ERP)Direct — LMS + SIS + ERP
SkoleraEgypt (2015)~35 schools across Egypt, Oman, KSA, Kenya; selected for Egyptian Nile schoolsDirect — LMS + SMS
EduXMENA / GulfKSA, UAE, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar; bilingual Arabic/EnglishDirect — cloud SIS/ERP
EdusysIndia → GulfUAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, KSADirect — school ERP
Odoo/Zoho education integrators (iWesabe, SowaanERP, Shyphan)KSA / UAEPer-project implementations; Arabic RTL, MoE reportingDirect — custom ERP builds
Alef EducationUAE (ADX-listed)~2.0M students, 84K educators, 19,000 schools (UAE, Indonesia, Morocco)Budget — AI content, not SIS
Noon AcademySaudiSocial learning, live classes, peer tutoringBudget — B2C tutoring
MadrasatiSaudi MoE6M+ students at peak; national blended-learning platformBudget — free public baseline

What the regional set tells us:

  • Arabic-first is real competition here, not a gap. Madrasati, Noon, Edraak, and Alef all render RTL correctly and design Arabic-first. Our Arabic advantage holds against the global incumbents and against Odoo/Edusys-style ports — it does not hold automatically against Classera or Alef. Lead with architecture and price in those rooms, not with "we support Arabic."
  • The regional leaders are funded and consolidating. Classera's $40M Series A and its ERP acquisition mean the mid-market is being rolled up. Speed of onboarding and price for a single small school is where a solo school still gets a worse deal from them than from us.
  • Free national platforms set the floor. In Saudi, "Madrasati is free" is the first objection. The answer is administration — fees, payroll, transport, admissions — which national learning platforms do not do.

British-curriculum MIS

The UK calls it MIS (Management Information System), not SIS. This set matters to us because British-curriculum private schools are dense across the Gulf, Egypt, Jordan and Sudan — a BSO-accredited or Cambridge/Pearson-following school in Riyadh or Khartoum is far likelier to shortlist iSAMS or Tes Engage than PowerSchool. They arrive through the British Council Partner Schools network (2,000+ schools delivering UK qualifications) and through UK head-office procurement, not through a MENA sales channel.

VendorSegmentReachNote
iSAMSIndependent + international1,800+ schools & groups; 1.7M student profilesSince 2005; modular, multilingual, multi-currency finance — the default for British international schools
Tes EngageIndependent + internationalCase studies in KSA, Kenya, South AfricaSingle-database core; Stripe payments; used by British International School of Jeddah
ArborUK state + trusts12,500+ schools and trusts; ~37% of UK schoolsOvertook SIMS as UK #1; absorbing Integris + ScholarPack by Feb 2026
ESS SIMSUK state~7,600 schools (~28% UK), down from 85% a decade agoThe cautionary tale: lock-in, a CMA investigation, then collapse
BromcomUK state + trusts5,600+ schools, 390+ MATs, 3.3M users40+ years; finance and BI bundled rather than sold as add-ons
WCBS HUBmisIndependentUK + international independentsFees/finance heritage; strong bursary and billing depth

What this set tells us:

  • Fee billing is the entry requirement, not a nice-to-have. Every vendor here leads with admissions → fees → billing → parent payments, because their schools are fee-paying. That is the same shape as our MENA private-school buyer, and it validates the finance block being first-class rather than a module.
  • Multi-currency and multi-curriculum are shortlist filters. iSAMS sells "foreign student enrollment, multi-currency finance, exam management" as the international differentiator. A British-curriculum school in Khartoum billing in USD and reporting in SDG will ask us this on the first call.
  • The SIMS story is our best anti-lock-in evidence. A vendor with 85% share lost more than half of it in a decade after a competition-authority investigation into contract lock-in. Schools remember; "you can export everything and leave" lands harder here than anywhere.
  • Where they beat us: UK exam-board integrations (Cambridge, Pearson, UCAS), safeguarding workflows, and decades of independent-school finance edge cases. Where we beat them: price for a single school, Arabic, local payment rails, and no UK-timezone support dependency.

Open-source peers

Architecturally the closest set: schools can read the code, self-host, and leave. This is the group we are benchmarked against by technical buyers and by the community.

ProjectStackNote
GibbonPHPStarted 2010 (Hong Kong); fully free, no paid add-ons — the purest OSS option
RosarioSISPHP + PostgreSQLModular, lightweight, paid add-on modules
openSISPHPCommunity edition + commercial tiers; K-12 and higher ed
FedenaRuby on RailsOpen core, 22 modules, global install base
OpenEduCatOdoo / PythonERP-shaped; inherits the Odoo module ecosystem
Frappe EducationFrappe / ERPNextSelf-host or Frappe Cloud; admissions, fees, assessments, portals

Where Hogwarts diverges from the peer set:

  • Multi-tenant SaaS by default, not a per-school install. Every peer above is architected as one deployment per institution. Hogwarts is schoolId-scoped with subdomain routing — one deployment serves many schools, which is what makes a free tier and a 24-hour onboarding possible.
  • Modern stack, not PHP/Rails/Odoo. Next.js 16 + React 19 + Prisma + TypeScript is what a 2026 contributor already knows.
  • Arabic-first rather than Arabic-translated. No peer above treats RTL as the default rendering path.
  • Where they are ahead: install-base maturity, plugin ecosystems (Odoo/Frappe especially), and years of edge cases in state reporting. Do not claim parity on breadth of deployment history.

Assessment & exam-creation tools

These are not full-SIS competitors — they are point tools for exam, test, and quiz creation. We track them because the exams module's creation UX competes with them directly, and because they map the design space for "how a teacher builds an exam." We researched ~25; the patterns below directly informed the 3-mode "Create Exam" direction (Adopt a blueprint · Generate with AI · Build from scratch).

Five creation models exist in the market. The fastest are blueprint-adopt and AI-prompt; the long configuration wizard is the anti-pattern teachers avoid.

Design lessons

  • Fast = adopt a blueprint, or prompt an AI. SchoolDeck/Testmate hit < 2 minutes by pre-baking the curriculum blueprint; AI tools hit 2–3 minutes from a topic prompt. The multi-step configuration wizard is the slow path teachers abandon.
  • Teachers skip configuration. Per-question-type difficulty and Bloom distributions are almost always defaulted or skipped — design for "click through with sensible defaults," not "configure everything."
  • 2–3 fixed professional layouts suffice. Pixel-level header/footer/cover customization is Canva's job, not assessment software's; it is the over-engineering to avoid.
  • Print-ready PDF with branding set once is non-negotiable for MENA/Sudan, where paper exams dominate.
  • A platform-curated, curriculum-aligned library is the moat. AssessPrep's 60k IGCSE bank and SchoolDeck's baked-in CBSE blueprints are why schools pay on day one. Our exam catalog/adopt already proves this pattern.

The gap nobody fills: professional Arabic-RTL exam papers and bilingual report cards. No researched tool handles Arabic-primary paper formatting well — this is our regional advantage.
